NEMSAC Holds Inaugural Meeting

The newly formed National EMS Advisory Council (NEMSAC) met for the first time April 24 and 25 at Department of Transportation headquarters in Washington, DC.

The 26-member panel of EMS experts was chosen by Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters to advise the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Office of EMS on standards, guidelines, benchmarks, and data collection. Additionally, the NEMSAC will offer advice on improving pre-hospital care.

While the first meeting focused on a number of administrative items, the group did undertake a brainstorming session to identify the issues that they will later prioritize. Committees will be formed with the purpose of addressing specific issues and drafting action plans and recommendations. Several issues were raised that affect volunteer EMS providers, such as retention and recruitment and training requirements.

NEMSAC member and National Volunteer Fire Council Kentucky State Director Ken Knipper voiced the sentiments of many on the panel during his opening remarks. “It’s truly an honor and a humbling experience. We have a great opportunity here.”

Knipper went on to acknowledge that many members of the NEMSAC started in EMS as volunteers and how that should help influence part of the group’s focus. “There should be a concentrated effort aimed at 13 to 18 year olds and their parents. By doing this, you not only help solve the volunteer recruitment problem, but you also provide a pool for future medical needs of all types.”

The NEMSAC has two years to make their recommendations to the Office of EMS. For more information, visit NHTSA’s web site at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/.
