Assistance to Firefighters Grant Application Period Now Open
Applications are now being accepted for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. To access the application, go to www.firegrantsupport.com/afg/. The application period closes on May 4 at 5 pm EDT. Awards totaling approximately $492.3 million will be awarded in fiscal year (FY) 2007.
The AFG or “Fire Grant” program is designed to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical organizations. Fire Grants help firefighters and first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources necessary to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. The Office of Grants and Training in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) administers the grants in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.
Applications will be accepted for consideration under two program areas: Operations and Safety Program Area and Vehicle Acquisition Program Area. The FY 2007 AFG also allows eligible applicants to submit an additional application for a regional project in which multiple organizations serving more than one local jurisdiction benefit directly from the activities implemented with the grant funds.
In addition to the application, the AFG web site at www.firegrantsupport.com/afg contains information including the program guidance, an applicant tutorial, frequently asked questions, and success stories. Additional assistance is available through the AFG Help Desk toll free at 1-866-274-0960. Throughout the grant application period, the Help Desk will be open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT.
The NVFC has also created an online resource center to help volunteer fire departments write successful narratives with their applications for the AFG program. The AFG and SAFER Grant Narrative Resource Center includes copies of narratives from successful past grant applications as well as a grant-writing guide created by DHS. These model grant narratives are to be used for example or reference purposes only and are not to be directly copied. The Resource Center is available online at www.nvfc.org/news/2007-afg-safer.html.
