| Death |
Workers Compensation:
The benefit is 2/3 of employee's wages from regular employment for spouse with no children, 75% for spouse with children living at home, and 55% for spouse with no children living at home. If the volunteer does not have regular employment, the benefit will be based on 1.5 times the maximum compensation rate for total disability. Minimum and maximum amounts apply and are adjusted annually. Children are considered dependents until age 19, age 25 if enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited educational institution, or longer if physically or mentally incapable of self-support. Upon remarriage, spouse receives two-year lump sum and benefits terminate.

Funeral:
Maximum of $6,000 for burial expenses.

| Workers Compensation |
All fire departments are required to provide workers' compensation for volunteers. For volunteer firefighters, the amount is based of the wages earned in their regular employment. For those without regular employment, the amount is based on an assumed wage of 150% of the maximum compensation rate for total disability. Firefighters must be injured in the line of duty or en route to or from a fire call in order to qualify. |

Municipalities must provide group term life insurance to age sixty-five that can be converted to a permanent form of life insurance at age sixty-five.

| Legal |
The political subdivision which employs a volunteer firefighter must defend him or her against legal action based upon negligent error or omission while in the performance of his or her lawful duties. If the volunteer is found guilty, the political subdivision must pay the damages.

| Malpractice |
No member of a volunteer fire department is liable for any damages caused in the commission of his or her duties. Immunity does not extend to the operation of a motor vehicle or any wanton or willful infliction of damage. |

| Retirement |
State statute authorizes local funding for a length of service award program, but does not mandate it. Fire departments must provide their own funding. Entitlement age is 65 with at least 10 years of service credit.

Exemption from military duty in time of peace provided that certificate of exemption is approved and authorized by municipal government. Volunteer is exempt for life after serving ten years in the fire service.
