Name: Bill Montz
Department: Southeast Nebraska MRC/CERT
Location: Lincoln, NE

Why are you an NVFC member?
After 42 years as an emergency responder, it’s still cool to be a part of something bigger than myself. I enjoy the fellowship, esprit de corps, training, and life insurance benefits!

What is your occupation?
Disabled first responder

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
After an explosion in 2019, my role changed, but did not fade. I am now a state instructor and enjoy doing this, as I feel my training saved my life and two other lives that fateful night.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1979

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
19 total saves, 16 total grabs, awarded state fire heroism award for 2019, assistant rescue chief at Tecumseh (NE) Rescue, and many lifesaving and valor medals and awards.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We resurrected CERT for a 16-county area in southeast Nebraska. We also provide EMS response for such events as State Fire School in Grand Island and the Cornhusker State Games.
