NVFC Training Summit

The NVFC’s annual conference, the NVFC Training Summit, focuses on volunteer responder health, safety, recruitment, retention, and leadership. Participate in valuable classroom training and share ideas and best practices with emergency responders from across the U.S. The next Training Summit will take place June 20-21, 2024, in Salt Lake City, UT. General Request The NVFC has over a dozen training courses that can be brought to your local department. Current course offerings include: Surviving the Job – Cancer in the Fire Service (2 hours) Personal Protective Actions for Opioid Emergencies (2-4 hours) Leadership for the Fire and Emergency Services (2 hours) Volunteer Fire Service Culture: Essential Strategies for Success (4-8 hours) Incident Safety Officer Training Series (2-4 hours) Fit for Duty, Fit for Life: Firefighter Physicals and the Volunteer Fire Service (2 hours) Planning and Implementing a Training Program (2 hours) Creating a Psychologically Healthy Fire Department (90 minutes-2 hours)
EV/AFV Course New! As the number of electric vehicles on the roadways increases, it is important for first responders to understand how a response involving these types of vehicles is different than those with an internal combustion engine. This awareness and fundamentals course sponsored by General Motors will introduce first responders to hybrid and electric vehicles, share data and resources, and equip the first responder with the knowledge and tools to respond more safely when a hybrid or electric vehicle is involved in an incident. This training will require space outside for a hands-on component with an electric vehicle. Learn more and request training here.
Recruitment and Retention Course Many fire and EMS departments across the nation are struggling to find new volunteer members and retain their current members. This session discusses the challenges of recruiting volunteers, presents valuable research collected as part of the NVFC’s Make Me A Firefighter campaign, and offers ideas to help overcome recruiting challenges. During the second half of the session, retention challenges, potential solutions, and the importance of leadership will be covered. This is a 90-minute training. Hazmat Train-the-Trainer Courses The NVFC, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), is offering a hazmat train-the-trainer program: Partners in Training (PIT) Crew. This project will help first responders gain the knowledge and skills they need to train others in their communities on hazmat safety and response. Through the partnership, the NVFC will bring in-person trainings to 15 locations nationwide at no cost to local host organizations. Wildland Fire Assessment Program Training The NVFC, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, offers an in-person training course to teach fire service volunteers how to properly conduct safety assessments for homes located in the wildland-urban interface and provide recommendations to residents to protect their property from wildfires.
