Corporate Member Profile: Homes for Heroes Offers NVFC Members Three Benefits When Buying or Selling a Home

As a partner of the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), Homes for Heroes provides NVFC members with three great benefits when you want to buy or sell a home. Homes for Heroes’ specialty is helping responders, including firefighters and EMS providers, successfully buy and/or sell a home and save significant money in the process. After closing on your home, Homes for Heroes will also award a portion of its earnings to the Homes for Heroes Foundation to help heroes in need AND give back to the NVFC to further support its members.

Below are three benefits Homes for Heroes provides to first responders.

Benefit #1: They Serve Responders

Local real estate and mortgage specialists join Homes for Heroes specifically to serve their community’s firefighters, EMS providers, and the other heroes. They are committed to helping clients navigate the real estate market and mortgage process, and they provide dedicated coaching every step of the way.

As Maryland firefighter Nataka explains, “My real estate agent really helped us in the home buying process. He made sure everything was done correctly and that we understood everything every step of the way. We are very appreciative for the help he put in and also grateful for the Homes for Heroes program. We’re glad that this program is available to my coworkers and others that put their lives on the line daily.”

When you sign up through the NVFC page of the Homes for Heroes site, it lets them know that you are an NVFC member or supporter and thus eligible for these benefits. The representative will then pair you up with local real estate and mortgage specialists in your area who will contact you to answer your specific questions.

Benefit #2: Valuable Savings Averaging $6,000

In addition to connecting responders with local real estate and mortgage specialists, Homes for Heroes sends a Hero Rewards® savings check if you buy and sell a home. The average check is $6,000. This money can be used to furnish your new home, buy appliances, get new carpet, do repairs, remodel, or anything else you choose.

Pam, a firefighter who found a new home in Virginia with Homes for Heroes, notes, “The extra funds were an unexpected surprise. Thank you for providing this service. Our real estate agent went above and beyond, and we appreciated everything she did for us!”

Benefit #3: Grants to Help Firefighters, EMS Providers, and Other Heroes

When you work with Homes for Heroes local specialists to buy or sell a home, and close on that home, Homes for Heroes donates a portion of its earnings to the Homes for Heroes Foundation. It’s all part of the Homes for Heroes Circle of Giving.

The Homes for Heroes Foundation awards grants to nonprofit organizations across the United States who are helping firefighters and other community heroes who are in dire need. The foundation has awarded grants totaling $1.3 million to organizations who support heroes. Examples of grants include:

  • $12,500 to the NVFC to support the Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund, which provides stipends to assist volunteer responders whose homes have been damaged or destroyed in a large-scale disaster.
  • $25,000 to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network to assist firefighters and their family members who are diagnosed with cancer.
  • $25,000 to the International Association of Fire Fighters’ Disaster Relief Fund to assist CalFire firefighters that battled the Camp Fire.
  • $10,000 to the Wichita Falls Professional Firefighters Association Benevolent Fund to support member firefighters and their families when tough times hit.

For every responder who signs up to work with Homes for Heroes using the NVFC partner page and closes on a home using one of their local specialists, Homes for Heroes will award grant dollars to the NVFC to further support their members.

In addition, Homes for Heroes has been working with Firefighters for Healing to build a Transitional Healing Center in Minneapolis. With its headquarters based in Minnesota, this project is close to the hearts of the Homes for Heroes team. The Homes for Heroes Foundation awarded $100,000 to help build this center, which was opened in January 2023. The center consists of 12 fully furnished suites to be used by the families of burn patients, no matter the length of their stay.
