Volunteer Spotlight: Dwight Wooton

Name: Dwight Wooton
Title:
Maintenance Officer
Department:
Viper Fire and Rescue
Location:
Cornettsville, KY

Why are you an NVFC member?
I joined the NVFC to further my education in the fire service. Learning and sharing information in the service community is a valuable tool.

What is your occupation?
Security technician

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
I joined the fire service to improve our community fire and rescue response. The need is always going to be there and with fewer volunteers nowadays I felt compelled to join. I want someone to answer the call for help if I need it. It’s people like me that have the ability to answer that call. One person can make such a huge difference on scene. I had to do it!

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
2021

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
My most memorable moment was assisting during the catastrophic flooding that affected our area last year. It was a very intense time for every first responder in our county. We know the people in our community. Seeing the devastation, loss of life, and water rescues that occurred is something that no responder could ever forget.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We regularly visit our schools and summer camps to educate children on the dangers of fire and emergency situations. Of course the fun part is letting the kiddos put some gear on and spray some water! We also haul water, traffic control for events, and host dinners and games for the community. We’re also in the process of building a park next to the station for everyone to enjoy!
