Volunteer Spotlight: Mike Riley
Name: Mike Riley
Title: Firefighter
Department Name: Black Mountain Fire Department
Location: Black Mountain, NC
Why are you an NVFC member?
I am a member because of the resources and support available to me, especially with respect to recruitment, retention, and training programs.
What is your occupation?
Firefighter
Why are you a volunteer firefighter, EMT, or rescue provider?
I volunteer because I realize that my community’s leaders do not place enough value on the town’s fire protection to hire enough personnel to protect the town. I want to help protect my neighbors, and as a paid firefighter in a different municipality, I can use my knowledge, skills, and abilities to help provide that protection.
What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
2004
What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
I have been a fire clown for several years. One of the best feelings is seeing a knowledge or behavior change in the children at the end of a performance. It is rewarding to know that I am helping make a difference.
What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We recently revamped our reflective 911 address sign program. We’ve increased the quality of the signs, which has improved the public’s desire for them. We are not only helping our citizens receive a faster emergency response, but the signs are helping to fund our volunteer retention program.
