Volunteer Spotlight: Patrick Doran
Name: Patrick Doran
Title: Lieutenant
Department Name: Richland Township
Location: Richland, MI
Why are you an NVFC member?
I often thought the volunteer fire service needed a unified voice nationally, and I didn’t really realize that the NVFC existed until I started doing some research. I’m a member because this organization supports the volunteer fire service in America. Volunteers in the USA have similar and also unique needs compared to our counterparts on career departments. I feel the NVFC works to address our unique needs such as recruitment issues, firefighter heath, and training to name a few. Just like career firefighters are honored to display the IAFF sticker on their vehicles and helmets, I am honored to display the NVFC logo on my vehicle. I also support my state firefighters’ association as well for similar reasons.
What is your occupation?
Physician Assistant
Why are you a volunteer firefighter, EMT, or rescue provider?
Because I enjoy the work and feel there’s a real need in the community to serve.
What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1988
What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
The strange calls, like one time when a lady had a large boa constrictor wrapped around her arm with her hand in its mouth and a firefighter on the engine stated he had a degree in zoology and knew how to unwrap the snake properly. All the police officers stood freaked out.
I also like to recall the good times – you know the family get-togethers, the barbecues, Christmas parties, the July 4th get-togethers, appreciation banquets, friendships.
What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We like to say we support our community first, with either emergency services or giving back. We participate in parades, give donations to organizations, tours, blood drives, fire prevention education, open houses, etc.
