NVFC Holds Train-the-Trainer Sessions for National Instructor Network

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) recently hosted two train-the-trainer events for instructors who will teach about key issues in the fire service across the U.S. One session addressed electric vehicle/alternative fueled vehicle (EV/AFV) incidents, while the other focused on recruitment and retention (R&R). Both trainings took place in Buffalo, NY, immediately following the NVFC Training Summit.

EV/AFV Course
The EV/AFV train-the-trainer session included hands-on demonstrations.Training is critical in ensuring responders know the dangers of EV/AFV incidents and how to handle them safely. To help meet the need for quality training nationwide, the NVFC, with support from General Motors, provided hands-on training to applicants chosen through a nationwide application process. Seven individuals representing seven different FEMA regions – from Washington to South Carolina – met in Buffalo, NY, on July 23-24. These trainers are qualified and skilled individuals with backgrounds in hazmat and EV response, fire service instruction, and response safety.

The one-and-a-half-day training included an overview of the NVFC’s EV/AFV training program, hands-on demonstrations with EVs, and discussions of the resources available to support instructors in their new roles.

R&R Course

To help meet the need for training on these important topics, the NVFC trained a cohort of nine instructors to deliver the NVFC’s R&R presentation nationwide. Instructors came from Arizona to Delaware to participate in the one-day training, reviewing instructional best practices, sharing ideas, and reviewing and collaboratively updating the R&R presentation.
