NVFC Receives Federal Grant to Support Emergency Responder Hazmat Response Training

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) is pleased to announce it has received a $740,000 Supplemental Public Sector Training (SPST) grant from the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. The SPST program provides funding to national nonprofit fire service organizations, which then train instructors to provide training to public-sector hazmat responders or those tasked with responding to accidents and incidents involving hazardous materials.

This is the NVFC’s second SPST grant. With the first grant, the NVFC created 15 new hazmat train-the-trainer courses and offered these courses at 16 locations nationwide, including fire departments and fire service conferences. Nearly 500 individuals were trained through almost 4,000 contact hours. Course attendees received an instructor guide, slides, an Emergency Response Guide (ERG), and a resource drive with dozens of forms and documents to assist in local hazmat response planning.

The new grant will build on the successes of the program’s first two years by offering 15 more free in-person training opportunities nationwide. The application period is now open for those wishing to host a training – apply now.

Additionally, the grant will allow the NVFC to reach even more responders through online, on-demand course offerings in the NVFC Virtual Classroom. The NVFC will also develop five new course topics based on emerging trends to supplement the course catalog.
