Volunteer Spotlight: Dawn Herlache
Name: Dawn Herlache
Title: Chief
Department: Townsend Fire Department
Location: Townsend, WI
Why are you an NVFC member?
As chief, I consider the NVFC to be a valuable resource. The various types of information that are available on the web site and through the publications are continuously timely and relevant to the volunteer fire service and the fire service as a whole. I often refer to the NVFC for training and procedures, as well as legal and grant information. I would recommend membership to anyone in the fire service.
What is your occupation?
Fire chief
Why are you a fire service volunteer?
I live in a rural community in northern Wisconsin. If it were not for volunteers, we wouldn’t have a fire department in our town. I joined the fire department as a way to help my community, knowing that it’s not for everybody.
What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1997
What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
My most memorable moments revolve around training with fellow firefighters. Some of the schools that I have attended over the years showed the best of people from different areas and backgrounds working together and helping each other become better firefighters and better people.
What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We have strived to be more proactive in our area. We try to engage with the community and provide opportunities for public education and safety. We work to let the community know that we are continuously training, using their tax dollars responsibly, and staying current with the best practices to protect their lives and property.
