Volunteer Spotlight: Derek Meier
Name: Derek Meier
Title: Firefighter
Department Name: Pasquotank Newland VFD
Location: South Mills, NC
How long have you been an NVFC member?
1.5 years
Why are you an NVFC member?
The NVFC provides an excellent source of information and keeps me updated on things going on in the fire service. The benefits available to members are a huge plus for recruiting purposes, as it provides a tangible benefit in an unpaid field. The ability to receive training, further your education, and provide insurance for your family is much appreciated.
What is your occupation?
Active Duty military
Why are you a volunteer firefighter, EMT, or rescue provider?
The opportunity to provide a service to the community. There’s an internal desire to serve, and no better way to do it then Fire/Rescue. Most people don’t even realize how much they rely on a volunteer force to provide the services they need.
There is no better feeling than coming to the aid of someone in need – to be there for them in their worst case scenario. The only better feeling is the way kids light up when they see the truck.
What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
2014
What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
The most memorable moment for me was when we responded to a fire in a garage. The garage was fully involved, and it had started to spread to the house. We were able to get it out and save the structure. Despite the loss he suffered, the homeowner made sure to come by and sincerely thank us for being there. What a great feeling!
What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We provide manpower for local community organizations whenever needed, from helping churches move furniture to providing use of our fridge trailer for the Ruritan club.
