Volunteer Spotlight: Harry A. Evans

Name: Harry A. Evans
Title:
Deputy Fire Chief
Department:
Mesilla Fire Department
Location:
Mesilla, NM

Why are you an NVFC member?
I enjoy sharing my ideas and experience with other people in the field. Plus, it helps me with some of my issues as I’m able to get ideas on how to fix or do something differently. Plus, you get to talk with other experts in the field or be directed to where you can get assistance. Plus, there is lots of free training.

What is your occupation?
Plan specialist/EOC manager

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
I have always wanted to be a volunteer. My dad was a volunteer for 30+ years in South Jersey. I always wanted to do it when I was a kid, hanging out with my dad at the firehouse and fire events. I thought it was cool. So after I got out of the military and settled in an area, I looked for a volunteer fire company and joined.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1995

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
To me all the moments with the service are memorable. Some are good; some are not so good. But you become part of a second family. You will do anything for them, just like your own family. It’s a feeling of belonging.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We have educated our community on several aspects of the fire service and fire prevention, as well as how to stay safe in all situations – not only at home but on the road and when traveling. We have shown them that we are here for them in their times of need regardless of the situation.
