Volunteer Spotlight: Mike Weibel

Name: Mike Weibel
Title: Battalion Chief
Department Name: Smithfield Fire Department
Location: Hyde Park, UT

Why are you an NVFC member?
I am an NVFC member because volunteer fire departments and the people who serve on them have little, if any, voice in local, state, and federal policies that affect the way we operate, the way we are funded, or the way we are protected. We also have little say in our futures as firefighters and fire departments. So many of those decisions are made by career departments, even though most volunteer departments are vastly different than their career counterparts.

Additionally, I am an NVFC member to help support my fellow volunteers. While myself and my department may have sufficient resources, I recognize that many of my colleagues around the country may not have the educational or influential resources to support their departments. My annual NVFC membership helps ensure that our volunteers have someone backing them up.

What is your occupation?
Public Health Specialist

Why are you a volunteer firefighter, EMT, or rescue provider?
I joined 20 years ago to give back to my community. I continue because I have a skill set that is needed to help people. And I have remained so that I can build the skills and education of our next generation of firefighters and EMTs.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1998

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
The first time my CPR saved someone. My first fatality: an 8-year-old boy just down the street with an aneurism. The first time leading firefighters through live fire training. And the first time students noted that I was the best instructor they ever experienced.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
The establishment of a countywide ambulance system, as well as the development of system-wide automatic aid between a dozen departments.
