Volunteer Spotlight: William Spaeth
Name: William Spaeth
Title: Fire Police Captain
Department: Sellersville Fire Department
Location: Sellersville, PA
Why are you an NVFC member?
I am a member for the training and the information and support from the NVFC.
What is your occupation?
House cleaner, crossing guard, and instructor
Why are you a fire service volunteer?
I joined my department 25 years ago because I had been asked several times to join for my cooking experience. I became a member and became a fire police officer. No one in my family ever belonged to a volunteer fire company.
What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1999
What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
My first moment was not a good one because not long after joining we had an apparatus crash and members were injured. But I got to see how the members pulled together for support. I volunteer because I like giving back to help others.
What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
Besides holding food drives for the local food pantry, we also have done yearly school presentations for fire safety, installed smoke detectors in homes, and are committed to helping the community. I have helped as much as possible. I have also set up recruitment tables at our events.
